Happy Friday Watchers!
I celebrated a big personal win last weekend. For the past 6 months I’ve been working on restoring my grandfather’s 1981 Hunter sailboat. On Saturday I officially set sail with 4 of my friends, and we christened her with a $12 bottle of champagne from CVS.
This personal project has consumed most of my free time since April. At times it’s been frustrating and demoralizing, but it’s also been incredibly confidence building.
I didn’t know anything about boats at the beginning. Drilling a hole into the hull for the first time terrified me. But it had to get done and no one else was going to do it. So I did it, and… fucked it up. But then I figured out how to plug the hole. And slowly, one fuck up at a time, it has come together.
It’s also been a great way to get out of tech. For the past 5 years I’ve spent so much time thinking about software, SaaS companies, venture capital, marketing tactics… none of that feels important when you’re covered in paint and bug bites, sweating your ass off and trying to fix the keel that was just damaged.
What are your wins? What do you do to get away from tech? Let me know, I’d love to share some in the newsletter next week.
Cheers from Charleston ✌️
