Happy Friday Watchers!
Last night was one of my favorite nights of the year… the NFL draft. Being the (American) football geek that I am I’ve read countless articles about draft prospects over the past weeks, and watched the entire (4 hour long) broadcast of the first round. 🏈💵
It’s fascinating to see the different approaches teams take to team building. Some pick the best player available, regardless of what their team needs are. Some will draft a player others don’t think highly of at all, because they’re confident the player will be a good fit in their system. Others look to roll the dice 🎲 on players who are still developing but have a ton of raw talent.
Personally I think the right approach requires balance. ⚖️ If your offensive line can’t block a pass rush to save their lives, it doesn’t do much good to grab a safety no matter how talented. 🤷♂️ But if a talented player that fits what you need isn’t available, it doesn’t do any good to reach for a sub-par substitute either.
The same is true of building startup teams. Sometimes you need someone who can come in and help out right away. But if you never invest time take a bet on someone raw, but talented then you’re going to limit your team’s potential.
Cheers from Charleston ✌️
